Project context and significance for residents
The tram line along Trieda SNP and the interchange hub in the Západ housing estate form the key transport artery of the whole city. The original infrastructure, built in the 1970s, no longer met the demands of modern urban mobility or safety and noise standards.
The comprehensive reconstruction carried out in 2026 brings not only the replacement of the rails and overhead lines themselves, but also a complete rebuild of the interchange hub. Passengers get comfortable, barrier-free access, vibration in neighbouring residential buildings is reduced, and thanks to smart priority at intersections, tram journey times are cut by up to 22 percent.
Main benefits of the project by 2026
- Green and quiet transport: flexible anti-vibration mats and a grass track cover reduce noise by 8 dB and eliminate dust.
- Barrier-free access: platform edges at the floor height of modern trams allow smooth boarding for seniors, parents with prams and people with disabilities.
- Dynamic priority at intersections: radio communication between DPMK vehicles and traffic signals guarantees a smooth green signal and reliable connections.
Technical and environmental parameters
- New grassed track superstructure: 3.2 km of surface
- Newly planted trees and shrubs: 185 lime trees and 2,400 shrubs
- Electricity savings: 28% thanks to energy recovery
- Security camera system: 36 smart cameras connected to the city police
- Shelters with photovoltaics: 14 stop structures
"Modern and reliable public transport is the basic prerequisite of a prosperous and clean European city. This project changes the face of the whole Košice – Západ district for generations to come."
